Part Three: A Towel and a Basin of Water – March 20, 2024

Pastor Jim Bryant

John 13:1-5 (ESV)

1Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

2During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him,

3Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God,

4rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist.

5Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

1. Teach us to humble ourselves.

Luke 22:24 (ESV)

24A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest.

Philippians 2:5-7 (NASB)

5Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,

6who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,

7but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.

Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV)

3Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,

4not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

1 Peter 5:5-7 (ESV)

5Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.

6Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you…

2. Teach us to serve one another.

Matthew 20:26-28 (NKJV)

26…Whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant.

27And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave –
28just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.

1 Peter 4:10 (NIV)

10Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.

 3. Teach us to show God’s love in practical ways.

John 13:14-15 (NLT)

14And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet.

15I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.

John 13:1 (NIV)

1It was just before the Passover Feast, Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love.

 John 13:34-35 (NIV)

34“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

35By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
